Even less than a tenth of the way into the season, we can see the Royals beginning to fulfill their preseason promise.

It's early, but the Kansas City Royals are showing signs of turning their preseason promise into on-field reality. After the first full week-plus of the season, the team sits at a perfectly even 5-5 record. While that's not the top of the standings, there are genuine positives to build upon. After all, no one expected a 162-0 run; the key for a developing team is what they learn from each game, win or lose.

Resilience has been a hallmark so far. The Royals have yet to be swept in a series, and they haven't lost more than two games consecutively. In fact, they've already strung together a three-game winning streak. That ability to bounce back quickly is a crucial trait for any team with playoff aspirations.

Their schedule, initially thought to be soft, has proven challenging. Their four losses came against two of baseball's current powerhouses: the Milwaukee Brewers, who are tied for the best record, and the Atlanta Braves, a perennial contender. Going 2-4 against that caliber of competition is a respectable showing. They even opened the season by taking down the division-leading Cleveland Guardians.

What's most encouraging is that several losses were tightly contested and could have swung the other way. A key hit from Bobby Witt Jr., a more familiar outing from a reliever, or a clutch defensive play might have flipped the script. These are the fine margins that separate good teams from great ones. For the Royals, proving they can hang with the league's best—even in defeat—is a significant step forward. The foundation is being laid, and the lessons from these early tests will be invaluable as the long MLB season unfolds.
