The New York Mets season is a perplexing one. Having the largest payroll in baseball ($333.151 million), the Mets are tied with the Philadelphia Phillies for the worst record in baseball (9-19).

The Mets roster is full of talent, containing one of the best hitters in baseball, outfielder Juan Soto, and the more exciting arms to watch, rookie right-hander Nolan McLean. The Mets added to that talent this offseason with the acquisition of outfielder Luis Robert Jr. and right-hander Freddy Peralta, who have not seemed to bring more wins.

Given how poorly the Mets have played, they received the most scorn from baseball executives around the league.

According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, who took a poll of executives, the Mets received an “overwhelming” amount of the votes (12) as the most disappointing team to start this season. One executive told Feinsand, “This team is too talented and costly to perform like this,” an NL executive said. “This has to be a very tough clubhouse right now.”

Another executive added: “Everything about the Mets has looked disjointed,” another NL exec said. “They don’t really look like they’re playing for each other or [manager Carlos] Mendoza, and they’ve been fraught with injuries.”

The Mets recently lost shortstop Francisco Lindor to injury (a right calf strain) and won't return until June. To add to their woes, the Colorado Rockies came into Citi Field and swept them.

The Mets open a three-game series with the Washington Nationals on Tuesday, which could prove to be an important series for manager Carlos Mendoza. On the hot seat for how the Mets have performed this season, losing another series could be what costs Mendoza his job.
