Sometimes the best stories in sports are the ones that almost never happened. Take the Detroit Lions' journey to hiring Dan Campbell—it turns out the franchise was just one coach's change of heart away from a completely different reality.

Back in 2021, the Lions were searching for a new head coach to lead a rebuild. Their top target? Iowa State's Matt Campbell, a rising star in the college ranks who had built the Cyclones into a Big 12 contender. According to ESPN's Jake Trotter, Campbell actually accepted the job—only to have second thoughts and decide to stay in Ames, Iowa.

"The three-time Big 12 Coach of the Year and winningest coach in Iowa State history had rebuffed overtures from other big-time college programs over the years, including from Texas and USC according to sources," Trotter wrote. "In 2021, Campbell initially agreed to coach the Detroit Lions before changing his mind; the Lions hired Dan Campbell instead."

That twist of fate opened the door for Dan Campbell, then the Saints' assistant head coach, to step into the spotlight. And in one of the most charming moments of his introductory press conference, Campbell himself acknowledged the near-miss.

"I told my agent, Rick Smith, I said, make sure that they think I'm Matt Campbell, so I think that's how this has really worked out great for me," Campbell joked. "So now that I'm in the seat, I am Dan Campbell. But I do know this, you can't go wrong with a Campbell."

Fast forward to today, and that twist of fate has transformed the Lions from a long-suffering franchise into perennial contenders. Dan Campbell's gritty, passionate leadership has turned Detroit into one of the NFL's most exciting teams. And for fans who love a good "what if" story, there's an extra layer of intrigue: running back David Montgomery, who starred at Iowa State under Matt Campbell, eventually found his way to Detroit anyway.

The lesson? In sports—and in life—sometimes the best moves are the ones you almost didn't make. Whether it's a coach finding his perfect fit or a player chasing a dream, the Lions' story is a reminder that the right opportunity often comes when you least expect it.
