Los Angeles is certainly a possible destination for big-name players.

The Los Angeles Lakers have never been shy about chasing superstars. From Kareem to Shaq to LeBron, the purple and gold have a long history of landing the biggest names in basketball. Now, the question on everyone's mind: Could Giannis Antetokounmpo be next?

According to recent reports, the Milwaukee Bucks superstar could be on the move this offseason. But for Lakers fans dreaming of a Giannis-Luka Doncic duo, the reality check comes with a dose of patience—and a whole lot of asset management.

The immediate obstacle? The Lakers simply don't have the trade chips. As ESPN's Bobby Marks explains, "Though the Lakers have nearly $50 million in cap space to absorb most of Antetokounmpo's salary, they lack the draft assets and young players on controllable contracts." In other words, a trade package that would satisfy Milwaukee is hard to build when you're offering picks from a team that would suddenly feature both Giannis and Luka.

So what's the play? The Lakers might need to think long-term—very long-term. Giannis's current contract runs through the 2026-27 season. If he plays hardball with Milwaukee and any potential trade partner by refusing to sign an extension, he could hit free agency in the summer of 2027.

"One realistic path for Los Angeles seems to be waiting until the 2027 offseason," Marks adds. "The Lakers would then have the available cap space to sign him outright."

It's a strategy that requires patience—a trait not always associated with big-market teams chasing championships. But in a league where the biggest moves often take years to materialize, the Lakers might just be willing to wait for the Greek Freak to come to them.
