Kylian Mbappé's incredible Champions League campaign has come to a close, but not before he etched his name among the competition's most prolific single-season scorers. The French superstar netted his 15th goal of the European season during Real Madrid's dramatic 4-3 quarter-final defeat to Bayern Munich, scoring in both legs of the tie.
Despite his heroics, Real Madrid's exit means Mbappé's wait for a Champions League trophy continues. Remarkably, no player in history has scored more career goals in the competition (70) without ultimately lifting the famous trophy.
His tally of 15 goals in just 11 games this season places him in truly elite company. Only one player has ever scored more in a single Champions League campaign: Cristiano Ronaldo, who set the seemingly untouchable record with 17 goals for Real Madrid back in the 2013/14 season. Mbappé's phenomenal run has, however, surpassed Lionel Messi's best-ever Champions League season, where the Argentine scored 14 times for Barcelona in their 2014/15 triumph.
This achievement highlights Real Madrid's modern dominance of the competition's goalscoring charts. Of the six occasions a player has hit 15 or more goals in a season, five have been by a Madridista. The sole exception is Robert Lewandowski, who scored 15 for Bayern Munich during their 2019/20 championship run.
