Detroit Red Wings fans have another reason to celebrate Steve Yzerman's legacy, as the legendary captain was just named the eighth-best player in Canadian Hockey League history as part of the CHL's 50th Anniversary celebration.

Yzerman's journey to hockey immortality began in junior hockey, where he spent two standout seasons with the Peterborough Petes before the Red Wings drafted him fourth overall in 1983. His final OHL campaign was nothing short of spectacular—42 goals and 49 assists for 91 points in just 56 games. That followed a rookie season where he notched 21 goals and 64 points in 58 contests.

Those numbers foreshadowed what was to come. In his first NHL season, Yzerman burst onto the scene with 39 goals and 87 points in 80 games, finishing second in the Calder Trophy voting to Buffalo Sabres goaltender Tom Barrasso.

The CHL's top 50 list, released one player at a time, includes several other familiar names for Red Wings faithful. Larry Murphy ranks 50th, Brendan Shanahan sits at 34th, Brad Richards checks in at 31st, Mike Modano holds 28th, Luc Robitaille is 26th, and Patrick Kane takes 21st. Still to come is dominant defenseman Paul Coffey, who's expected to land in the top seven.

Beyond the CHL honors, there's plenty of action in the Red Wings organization. Defenseman Erik Gustafsson has fully embraced his role with the Grand Rapids Griffins, becoming a critical piece of their playoff push. Tim Robinson has a preview of Game 4 in the AHL playoff series between Grand Rapids and Manitoba.

On the international stage, Justin Faulk and Detroit prospect Max Plante will represent Team USA at the World Championships. Meanwhile, there's unfortunate injury news for Detroit prospect Eddie Genborg, selected 44th overall in 2025. He was hurt in Game 1 of his series and has missed Games 2 and 3. Following the same policy as the Red Wings, the Griffins haven't disclosed details—a tough break for both the player and the organization's future plans.
