The Indianapolis Colts are running late. They don’t have time to gather ingredients, preheat the oven, and let something bake. This is a franchise that feels it can win now. Whether you agree, bringing back Daniel Jones and Alec Pierce shows they feel last year’s meltdown was more of a supernatural disaster than a foreboding omen. That is why this team needs an infusion in this year’s draft. It needs to hit hard and immediately. The Colts need some microwave ready rookies.
Chris Ballard loves players with high RAS but that can mean raw talent. If the personnel is in the building to develop that talent, sometimes it makes sense to pull the trigger on a high upside player. Take the risk and see what you have. Those moments have passed for Ballard, however. He only has so many shots left, and it truly feels this could be his last if he doesn’t nail the draft. The best way to demonstrate he has is by finding some starters.
That is a tough ask, but it is the corner Ballard has backed himself into. Things are teetering on a tear down and rebuild if this doesn’t work. Not everything hinges on this rookie class, but the amount of losing, the unproven, high priced quarterback, and potential lack of new talent would create a powder keg that most in the organization wouldn’t survive. Most rookies take a season or two to round into form. Ballard can’t have that. Not this year. He needs ready-made, farm to table, done in two minutes type of talent. He doesn’t have to nail every pick, but nab two starters, ideally on defense, and he might turn this thing around.
Chris Ballard has his work cut out for him. Those ready-made rookies who translate immediately to the NFL are hard to come by. Hopefully, not having a first round pick has made him laser focused on maximizing the draft to be able to find such talent. Get your popcorn in the microwave and set it for two or under as that is about how much time Ballard has to get the Colts back on track.
