It's been over a week since the NFL Draft, and while the 257 selected players and countless undrafted free agents are already settling into rookie minicamps—with the Arizona Cardinals and 23 other teams welcoming their newcomers next weekend—there's one story that deserves a second look.
Former Cardinals linebacker Zack Walz is still riding the emotional high of being part of this year's Pat Tillman Pick announcement, alongside Tillman Scholar Margo Darragh. We covered their experience shortly after the draft, but as Walz himself might say, channeling the great Paul Harvey, here's "the rest of the story."
Walz got visibly emotional recalling the moment Darragh—a Naval Academy graduate herself—opened the card revealing Navy defensive tackle Landon Robinson as the 226th overall pick. "When she pulled it, the goosebumps that came over her, she couldn't believe it," Walz said. "She's like, 'I can't believe it's a Naval Academy player.'"
"I haven't been choked up one time in the last week, but I think about it... this whole week has been such a crazy week, and so many amazing things happened," Walz continued. "I've never really slowed down to pinch myself or to smell the roses. And now I'm thinking about all the things that have happened and the timeline of how this thing has played out—it's almost unexplainable."
It's another powerful chapter in what we called the Circle of Life last week. And at the heart of it all? A high school teammate, a set of dog tags, and a special T-shirt.
Walz immediately thought of Eric Lewis, a safety and running back from their days at St. Francis High School in Mountain View, California. Lewis's father, Sherman, was a longtime NFL assistant coach. "He's one of my closest friends from high school growing up," Walz said.
That connection—rooted in shared dreams, hard work, and the kind of bond that only football can forge—is what makes the Tillman Pick more than just a draft selection. It's a reminder that the game is about people, purpose, and the stories that continue long after the final pick is announced.
