Texas entered the SEC softball tournament as the No. 4 seed, but they'll leave as champions after a dominant 7-1 victory over second-seeded Alabama on Saturday at John Cropp Stadium in Lexington, Kentucky.
The Longhorns' win adds another chapter to the SEC's recent history of tournament parity—Texas is the seventh different program to claim the title since 2021. Last year saw Oklahoma and Texas A&M share the crown, while Florida won in 2024, Tennessee in 2023, Arkansas in 2022, and Alabama in 2021.
After Alabama's Alexis Pupillo launched a first-inning home run, Texas pitcher Teagan Kavan settled into a groove that would define the game. The sophomore delivered a complete-game masterpiece, striking out 12 batters while allowing just one run on three hits. She threw 107 pitches—70 for strikes—and outdueled Alabama's SEC Pitcher of the Year, Jocelyn Briski.
Kavan's composure shined brightest in the fourth inning when she faced a bases-loaded, one-out jam. With runners reaching on an error, a single, and a walk, she responded by striking out Audrey Vandagriff and Ambrey Taylor to escape unscathed.
Offensively, Katie Stewart led the charge with three hits, including a towering solo home run in the sixth inning—her 25th of the season. The Longhorns racked up 13 hits total, all singles except Stewart's blast. Leighann Goode and Ashton Maloney each added two hits to fuel the attack.
Now at 42-10, Texas looks ahead to the NCAA Tournament. The 64-team field will be announced Sunday at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN, with the Longhorns expected to host both a regional and a super regional. The regional round kicks off May 15.
