BANDON, Ore. — The winds howled across the rugged Oregon coastline, the title hung in the balance, and Jesse Droemer found himself in a most unexpected situation: racing from the tee box to a Porta Potty 200 yards away. What followed was a shot that would define the PGA Professional Championship.

Droemer, a teaching pro at Riverbend Country Club near Houston, stepped up to the 17th hole at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort tied for the lead with Ben Kern. His three-shot advantage on the back nine had evaporated, and with the flag tucked behind a knob on the left side of the green and strong winds pushing from the left, the pressure was immense. But Droemer had no time to dwell on it.

“I had to use the restroom so bad, I had to run from the tee over to the Porta Potty,” Droemer recalled with a grin after hoisting the trophy. His caddie, Carl Everts, quickly grabbed the yardage, and Droemer stepped up and struck a pure 8-iron from 173 yards. The ball soared against the blue sky, drifting just a touch right before landing near the flagstick. It was the kind of shot that makes golfers’ hearts skip a beat—and it secured his victory.

Though Droemer missed the birdie putt and settled for par, the damage was done. Kern, playing in the final group behind him, watched his approach slide off the green into the rough, leading to a bogey that handed Droemer a one-shot lead. Both players parred the 18th, and the title was Droemer’s.

“No time to think, just react,” Droemer said. “I do think that was one of the shots of the tournament, for sure.”
