The Texas Longhorns softball team is set to defend their national title after being awarded the No. 2 overall seed in the NCAA postseason tournament. While some hoped for the top spot, the selection committee ultimately favored SEC rival Alabama for the No. 1 seed. Still, the Longhorns have plenty to be proud of—this marks the second-highest seed in program history, trailing only last year's No. 1 seed en route to their championship run.
Texas will kick off their postseason journey by hosting the Austin Regional at McCombs Field, starting Friday, May 15. The regional field includes Wisconsin, Baylor, and Wagner, offering a mix of familiar foes and new challenges. The Longhorns open against Wagner (22-26) at 3 p.m. CT, with the game streaming on ESPN+. Wagner first faces Baylor at 12:30 p.m. CT.
The Longhorns enter the tournament on a high note, having captured the SEC postseason title with a commanding 6-1 victory over Alabama. The SEC dominates the national seed landscape, placing six of the eight seeds, including Oklahoma at No. 3, Arkansas at No. 5, and Florida at No. 7. In total, ten SEC teams earned bids to the 64-team field.
The winner of the Austin Regional advances to face the College Station Regional champion in the Super Regional, with a spot in the Women's College World Series on the line. For Texas, the path to back-to-back titles begins at home, where the roar of the Longhorn faithful will be a key advantage. As the team says: "We'll see y'all at the Austin Regional."
