Texas baseball is shaking things up on the mound for a pivotal weekend series. Head coach Jim Schlossnagle has announced that sophomore left-hander Dylan Volantis will get the ball for Friday night's opener against the 11th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.
This move represents a shift from the Longhorns' established weekend rotation order. Typically, Texas has started with Rugar Riojas on Fridays, followed by Luke Harrison and then Volantis. However, with last Sunday's game against Texas A&M cancelled due to weather, Volantis was left without a start. Schlossnagle emphasized this adjustment is simply to keep the talented lefty on schedule, not a demotion for Riojas or Harrison.
Volantis has been a standout this season, boasting a perfect 4-0 record and a stellar 2.01 ERA. His ability to miss bats has been a key asset, as he's racked up 57 strikeouts across 44.2 innings of work. Getting him back on the mound quickly is a strategic priority for the Texas staff.
Following Volantis on Friday, the plan is to return to Rugar Riojas on Saturday, with Luke Harrison slated for the series finale on Sunday. This high-stakes series against a top-15 opponent is a perfect time for the Longhorns to showcase their pitching depth and adaptability as they build momentum for the heart of the season.
