The college basketball transfer portal is officially open, and Texas A&M is wasting no time. After a successful first season under head coach Bucky McMillan that culminated in a fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, the Aggies are now focused on building a roster capable of going even deeper. With the portal closing on April 21, the clock is ticking to find the right pieces.
That urgency increased on Tuesday when two key guards from last year's squad, Josh Holloway and record-setting three-point shooter Ruben Dominguez, officially entered the portal. Their departures create immediate needs, particularly for a veteran guard who can thrive in McMillan's fast-paced system.
Enter KJ Lewis. According to reports from On3's Joe Tipton, the Aggies are firmly in the mix for the Georgetown transfer and El Paso, Texas native. Lewis, an All-Big East selection last season, averaged 14.9 points and a disruptive 2.1 steals per game for the Hoyas.
While his three-point shooting (30%) leaves room for growth, Lewis's profile is otherwise a tailor-made fit for College Station. His ability to attack the rim and provide lockdown perimeter defense aligns perfectly with McMillan's philosophy. Pairing him with a returning veteran like Marcus Hill could give Texas A&M one of the more dynamic backcourts in the SEC.
The competition will be stiff, with schools like St. John's and SMU also reportedly in pursuit. But for an Aggies program looking to reload and make a statement, landing a high-impact, two-way player like KJ Lewis would be a major victory in the portal wars and a significant step toward another March run.
