In a bizarre twist of fate at the Italian Open, Iga Swiatek's new coach, Francisco Roig, has been sidelined with a torn Achilles tendon—all because of a friendly 100-euro ($118) bet gone wrong.
The incident occurred during a promotional practice session in Rome's historic Piazza del Popolo, where the world number three and her 58-year-old coach decided to add a little extra spice to their training. Roig, a veteran coach who has worked with legends like Rafael Nadal and Emma Raducanu, was stretching for a volley when disaster struck.
"Yeah, I broke my coach's Achilles," Swiatek admitted with a mix of humor and regret after her first-round win over Caty McNally at the Italian Open on Friday. "We were having a practice on Piazza del Popolo. It was supposed to be a live practice... We made a bet for 100 euros."
The Polish star, currently seeded fourth in Rome, revealed that the match was already at a critical point. "I had 5-4 and the match point already. He did a split step and tore his Achilles. It happened on Saturday. On Tuesday, he had surgery already in Warsaw. We kind of took care of him," she explained.
For tennis fans, this story is a stark reminder that even the most seasoned coaches aren't immune to the sport's physical demands—especially when there's a little friendly competition and some cash on the line. As Swiatek continues her quest for the Italian Open title, she'll have to do so without her new coach courtside, at least for now.
Here's hoping Roig makes a speedy recovery—and that the next bet is a bit less costly.
