The Tennessee High Vikings girls' tennis team and the University High Bucs are hitting the road, with state championship dreams fueling their journeys to the TSSAA state tournaments.

In Bristol, the Vikings departed Monday morning for Chattanooga, where they'll compete in the Class A/AA state tournament. The team is bringing a mix of youth and experience, including two freshmen set to compete in doubles on Thursday and Friday. But first, all eyes are on Tuesday's 2 p.m. matchup against perennial powerhouse Brentwood at the Champions Tennis Complex.

Senior Mayleigh Stalnaker says this trip feels different. "It's especially rewarding in my senior year because we worked incredibly hard to earn this opportunity," she shared. While she traveled to state as a sophomore, she didn't get to play—making this year's on-court debut even more meaningful.

Head Coach Kitzmiller believes the team is ready for the challenge, hinting that a desire for revenge might spark extra motivation. "The teams match up nicely," he noted. "I expect a competitive battle that could go either way."

Meanwhile, in Johnson City, the University School Bucs received a spirited send-off from the entire student body as they departed for their third consecutive state tournament appearance. They'll face Murfreesboro Central, a program that has also reached state each of the last two seasons.

Senior Gavin Olsen reflected on the journey, noting that his class arrived the same year the school revived its tennis program. "Having been there before, the experience feels special," he said. "I'm determined to bring home a title in my final year."

Teammate Graham Mefford added that while he's used to individual tennis, these last few seasons have been rewarding because of the bonds formed with his peers—many of whom are also graduating. Head Coach Chris Davidson expressed confidence in both teams, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting week of championship tennis.
