Teen sprint sensation Gout Gout is set to take the track world by storm once again. The 18-year-old Australian phenom, who has already shattered an under-20 world record faster than Usain Bolt's best at the same age, will lead a 75-strong Australian squad at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, this August.
"I'm really excited to get out there at World Athletics Under 20s," Gout said in a statement Tuesday announcing the squad for the Aug. 5-9 championships. "It's a great stadium and place to run fast, and I feel confident I'll be ready to step up and make Australia proud."
Gout will headline the event in the 200 meters—an event where he already holds the under-20 world record—and will also anchor Australia's 4x400 relay team. The stage is set for him to lower that record even further on the same track where he first made history.
Just last month, Gout lit up the Australian open titles with a blistering 19.67-second run in the 200 meters, shaving 0.02 seconds off Erriyon Knighton's under-20 world mark of 19.69—a record set in Eugene back in 2022. Remarkably, that time was even faster than eight-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt's 19.93 in 2004, when Bolt was 17. (World Athletics lists Knighton's 19.49 in 2022 as the fastest ever by an under-20 athlete, though it was not ratified as a record.)
Gout's performance marked the first time he officially dipped under 20 seconds, following a wind-assisted 19.84 last season. He had already made headlines in 2024 with a 20.06 run, the fastest 200 meters ever by a 16-year-old.
At the Australian junior titles last month, Gout aimed to break the 10-second barrier in the 100 meters but fell just short. He admitted his sole focus was securing his spot for the world juniors, not chasing records. "Obviously, I didn't have the best start, but I came out for the W pretty much," he said at the time. "I was waving to my family, fans and a couple of friends... the more of a show, the more people who are going to come and watch."
With his electric speed, showmanship, and a world record already in his pocket, Gout is poised to be the breakout star of the championships. For fans of track and field—and anyone who loves a great underdog story—Eugene is about to become the center of the sprinting universe. Gear up, because this teen sensation is ready to make Australia proud.
