The scoreless drought in America’s Finest City is over, and so is the production outage from Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado as the San Diego Padres beat the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night at Petco Park.Tatis Jr. had a two-out single as part of a three-run fifth inning for the Padres (23-16), then Machado crushed a solo home run in the eighth inning off St. Louis (23-16) reliever Matt Svanson to snap a 24 at bat hit-less streak to help San Diego take their first of the four game set.

After a frustrating stretch of scoreless baseball, the San Diego Padres finally broke through—and so did their two biggest stars. On Saturday night at Petco Park, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado ended their personal slumps to lead the Padres to a much-needed win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Padres entered the game having been shut out for 21 consecutive innings, but first baseman Ty France ended the drought in dramatic fashion. With one swing, he crushed a first-pitch sinker 405 feet to center field, tying the game and igniting the San Diego dugout. It was the Padres' first hit of the night against Cardinals starter Dustin May, who ultimately took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs over six innings.

France's homer sparked a three-run fifth inning. After a walk and a single, Tatis Jr. stepped to the plate with two outs and delivered a broken-bat flare to shallow right field, scoring both runners and giving the Padres the lead. The hit marked Tatis Jr.'s first RBI since April 29—a drought of seven games that had fans and fantasy owners alike growing restless.

Manny Machado, who had been mired in an even deeper 24 at-bat hitless streak, put an exclamation point on the night in the eighth inning. He launched a solo home run off Cardinals reliever Matt Svanson, padding the Padres' lead and sending a clear message: the stars are back.

On the mound, starter Randy Vásquez earned his fourth win of the season with a crafty five-inning outing. Though he allowed six hits and a run, he consistently worked out of jams, stranding two runners in scoring position and striking out six batters—half of them with his four-seam fastball. He threw strikes on 59 of his 94 pitches, showing the kind of efficiency that keeps a bullpen fresh.

Closer Mason Miller made things interesting in the ninth, issuing two walks—the first time he's done so all season—and loading the bases. But he bore down, striking out four batters over 1 1/3 innings to earn his 12th save of the year and seal the 4-1 victory.

With the win, the Padres evened the four-game series and improved to 23-16 on the season, matching the Cardinals' record. San Diego will look to build momentum as they continue the set, with their stars finally shining bright again.
