Fresh off his retirement skates, T.J. Oshie is already making waves in the broadcast booth, and he's setting his sights on a compelling underdog story for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The 2018 champion and Minnesota hockey legend has identified the Minnesota Wild as the team he's most intrigued by as the postseason begins.
"I’m super interested to see how the Minnesota Wild do," said Oshie, who has moved his family back to his home state. "I think with the trades that they made... If [Filip Gustavsson] plays well, I think Minnesota, over seven games here, is gonna be a really tough team to beat."
Oshie's interest is well-founded. The Wild engineered the season's biggest blockbuster, acquiring superstar defenseman Quinn Hughes from Vancouver in December. Hughes made an immediate impact, setting a new franchise record for points by a defenseman with 53 in just 48 games, powering Minnesota to a 104-point finish.
But the Wild didn't stop there. At the trade deadline, they doubled down on experience, adding veteran leaders Nick Foligno and Jeff Petry—both still chasing their first Stanley Cup after nearly 2,300 combined NHL games. This blend of elite talent and seasoned grit makes them a fascinating dark horse.
Their path, however, is a gauntlet. Finishing third in the brutal Central Division pits them against the Dallas Stars, a 112-point juggernaut that has reached the Western Conference Final three years running. And waiting in the wings is the Presidents' Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche, who dominated the regular season with 121 points.
The stage is set for a classic playoff battle. Can the Wild's potent new mix of skill and heart overcome a path filled with proven contenders? According to Oshie, they have the pieces to make a serious run and become the story of the playoffs.
