The Syracuse Crunch are on the brink of elimination after a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime loss to the Cleveland Monsters in Game 3 of their North Division semifinal series Friday night at Upstate Medical University Arena. The defeat leaves the Crunch trailing two games to one in the best-of-five series, with their season hanging in the balance.
The Crunch came out strong, striking first midway through the opening period when Spencer Kersten lit the lamp to give Syracuse an early 1-0 lead. But Cleveland responded in the second period, with Riley Bezeau and Guillaume Richard each finding the back of the net to put the Monsters ahead 2-1.
Syracuse showed their resilience late in the second period, as Jakob Pelletier set up Nick Abruzzese in front of the net for a clutch equalizer that sent the teams into the intermission tied at two. The momentum carried into the third period when Ethan Gauthier redirected Tommy Miller’s shot from the point just over three minutes in, giving the Crunch a 3-2 advantage.
But the Monsters refused to back down. Guillaume Richard netted his second of the night with under 12 minutes remaining in regulation, knotting the game at three and forcing overtime. In the extra frame, it was Hudson Fasching who played the hero for Cleveland, following up his own shot and wrapping around a rebound to beat the Crunch goalie and seal the victory.
The Crunch now face a must-win situation as they look to keep their playoff hopes alive. Game 4 is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. back at Upstate Medical University Arena. For hockey fans and Syracuse supporters alike, it’s do-or-die time in the North Division semifinals.
