There's something special about stepping onto the field at Sutter Union High's Ruth Lowman Field. This hallowed ground has witnessed championship after championship, and the echoes of those glory days still resonate through the small rural community. Two years ago, the Huskies achieved the impossible—a perfect 30-0 season that ended with a Northern California Division III Regional title over Dixon, a spring so magical that several players earned state-wide recognition.

Now, Sutter believes it has the talent to chase that same dream again. And Wednesday's opening-round playoff performance was a powerful statement of intent. The third-seeded Huskies dismantled No. 14 Galt 10-0 in just 5⅓ innings at Ruth Lowman Field, kicking off the 2026 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division V playoffs with authority.

The star of the show was junior Malaina Wilder, who delivered two extra-base hits that set the tone early and often. She launched a two-run homer over left-center on the very first pitch she saw from Galt sophomore Evianna Barrera, igniting the Sutter offense. Later, she ripped a double to right and came around to score, fueling back-to-back four-run rallies in the fifth and sixth innings that ended the game early.

"Always takes one—Malaina's home run started everything and we just ran with it," said Sutter head coach Taylor Ernst. "We've been working on the outside pitch all season, and I'm proud they executed it. We always hit it where it is pitched; if she's throwing you outside, take that ball opposite field and good things happen."

Junior starter Brooklyn Murphy was equally dominant in the circle, tossing a five-hit shutout to keep Galt's bats quiet all afternoon. "Our girls have worked to build to this moment," Murphy said.

Ernst emphasized that Wednesday's win was about more than just advancing—it was about sending a message. "The girls want it; they've worked hard from our first game until now. They've put in effort to make that advancement."

That message will be put to the test today. Sutter (19-8-1) hosts No. 11 Lincoln in the Division V quarterfinals at 4 p.m. at Ruth Lowman Field. It's the first meeting between these two programs in the MaxPreps era, and a win would send the Huskies back to the SJS semifinals for the first time since that magical 30-0 run in 2023.

Lincoln, co-champions of the Pioneer Valley League, enters with a 15-12-1 record after upsetting No. 6 Ripon 10-3. The Fighting Zebras will be hungry, but on this field, with this team, Sutter believes history is waiting to be written again.
