In a developing story that has shaken the college football community, the suspect wanted in connection with the shooting of Missouri Tigers running back Ahmad Hardy has been apprehended. Rashodrick Harris, 20, of Wayne County, Mississippi, was taken into custody Thursday night in Paducah, Kentucky, and is currently awaiting extradition back to Mississippi, according to Laurel Police Department Sgt. Macon Davis.
The incident occurred Sunday at an outdoor concert held at a bike club in Laurel, Mississippi—about 90 miles from Hardy's hometown of Oma. Hardy, a standout All-America running back and finalist for the prestigious Doak Walker Award, was struck in the upper leg during the chaos. At least one other person was also injured in the shooting.
Hardy underwent surgery in Mississippi before returning to Columbia, Missouri, on Wednesday to continue his recovery. While three other individuals initially taken into custody have since been released without charges, Harris now faces two counts of aggravated assault. Authorities have indicated the investigation remains active, with more arrests potentially on the horizon.
Laurel police were able to identify Harris as a suspect through security video footage, and an arrest warrant was issued following an interview with a witness. Sgt. Davis noted that it's unclear why Harris was in Paducah, a seven-hour drive from Laurel.
The news casts a shadow over what has been an electrifying season for Hardy. The 5-foot-10, 205-pound running back rushed for 1,649 yards—second among all Football Bowl Subdivision players—and scored 16 touchdowns, powering the Tigers to an 8-5 record and a Gator Bowl appearance against Virginia. With several mock drafts already projecting him as the top running back available in next April's NFL draft, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz has stated that Hardy's status for the upcoming season remains uncertain as he focuses on his recovery.
