Surrey have finally broken their duck this season, securing a dominant eight-wicket victory over Sussex at the Kia Oval for their first County Championship win of the campaign. After three frustrating high-scoring draws, the defending champions showed their class to collect a maximum 22 points and put a sluggish start firmly behind them.

The final day began with Sussex still 188 runs adrift at 76-4 in their second innings, but the visitors weren't about to roll over quietly. Charlie Tear led the fight with a career-best 61—his second half-century in just four first-class appearances—while Jack Carson chipped in with 48 and captain Ollie Robinson added a gritty 42. Surrey had to work hard for their wickets, needing the second new ball to finally break the resistance.

There was a heartwarming moment when Sussex opener Tom Haines returned to the crease after retiring hurt on day three, having been struck in the helmet grille by Matt Fisher's first ball of the innings. After passing concussion checks overnight, Haines showed tremendous courage to join Robinson and add 35 crucial runs, making sure Surrey would have to bat again.

Jordan Clark (3-40) and Matt Fisher (3-52) were the pick of the Surrey bowlers, with Fisher eventually trapping Henry Crocombe leg-before for four to end the Sussex innings at 277. That left Surrey needing just 14 runs for victory, but not before a couple of early scares—Rory Burns fell leg-before to James Coles for one, and Ryan Patel was plumb in front off the very next ball. But Dom Sibley and Ollie Pope calmly knocked off the remaining runs after tea to seal the win.

For Surrey, this victory marks a turning point after their slow start to the season. For Sussex, it's a first defeat that will sting, but the fight shown by their lower order suggests there's plenty of spirit in this side.
