Supermarket shoppers got a surprise of a lifetime when former England goalkeeper Ben Foster turned the aisles into an impromptu football pitch for a penalty shootout. The legendary shot-stopper, who enjoyed a stellar two-decade career with Manchester United, Watford, and Birmingham City, was joined by Barnsley striker David McGoldrick and Oldham defender Will Sutton for the kickabout.
The trio brought football fever to every corner of the store—from juggling keepy-uppies in the cereal aisle to stepping in at the checkout counter. Young shoppers even had the chance to step up and take penalties against Foster himself, creating unforgettable memories for families doing their weekly shop.
The event at Tesco marked the launch of this year's Kellogg's Football Camps, which will take place at 73 locations across the country this summer. Now in their third year, the camps are designed to help keep children fit, active, and entertained during the long school break—a welcome relief for parents facing the challenge of the summer "juggle."
"Taking something as everyday as the weekly shop and turning it into football fun for families has been brilliant," said Foster, who made over 500 career appearances. "I remember going to the supermarket with my parents when I was younger, wishing I was out playing instead. It's great to show shoppers they can stock up their cupboards and keep their kids active at the same time. Kellogg's Football Camps gives kids the chance to learn new skills and make friends—all while giving parents a helping hand over the busy summer holidays."
The camps feature sessions led by FA-qualified coaches, with 39,000 free places open to girls and boys aged five to 15. According to recent research, 50% of parents feel stressed at the thought of summer childcare, with finding affordable activities (40%) and balancing work with family time (34%) ranking as top concerns. Encouragingly, 45% of parents said making friends and supporting mental wellbeing are key reasons for getting their children involved in sport—alongside reducing screen time (47%).
Dean O'Brien, UK general manager of Kellogg's, added, "We know the summer holidays can be a real juggle for families, so we're proud to bring Kellogg's Football Camps to life. Whether it's in the aisles or on the pitch, we're here to help families stay active and connected."
