The New York Mets' challenging start to the season has hit another snag, as the team placed infielder Jorge Polanco on the 10-day injured list with a right wrist contusion. The move, made retroactive to Wednesday, comes as the Mets look to halt a nine-game losing streak.
Polanco's first season in Queens has been a struggle at the plate, with the veteran batting just .179 through 56 at-bats. The injury appears to have stemmed from a few swings during a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier in the week, worsening after the fact. "We don't have a timetable for how long this is going to last," manager Carlos Mendoza stated, emphasizing the need to let the wrist calm down.
This setback is particularly frustrating as Polanco, who signed a two-year deal in the offseason, was reportedly beginning to trend upward from a separate ankle issue. His absence further tests the Mets' depth as they navigate this early-season adversity.
In a corresponding roster move, the club recalled catcher Hayden Senger from Triple-A Syracuse. Senger's promotion provides Mendoza with additional flexibility behind the plate, allowing him to potentially deploy Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens more strategically in the lineup or as pinch-hitters.
