When Strake Jesuit football captain JC Martinez steps onto the field, he brings more than just his two-time all-district offensive lineman credentials. He carries a legacy—one that spans generations and bridges two countries.
"It's very real. It's very tactile. You can feel it," Martinez says of the sport that has shaped his high school years. But football is just one chapter in this remarkable student-athlete's story.
As he prepares to walk across the graduation stage, Martinez stands out not just for his gridiron prowess, but for a staggering list of academic achievements. He's the founder of his school's finance club, a member of the robotics engineering team, and served as student body president. And this fall, he'll trade his football cleats for a campus at MIT—one of the world's most elite institutions.
"Everyone there is super motivated," Martinez explains with the same intensity he brings to the line of scrimmage. "Trying to tackle the world's biggest problems. And even if I'm not solving the most challenging math problem, I'm surrounded by people who are so driven."
But for all his accomplishments in the classroom and on the field, Martinez finds his greatest peace at the piano. His grandmother taught him to play when he was growing up in Mexico, and the instrument remains his sanctuary.
"Putting your fingers in certain keys, it feels weird, but over time, as you practice, it starts giving way," he says after finishing a classical piece. "You can start hearing the melodies, and it comes out very nicely."
For Martinez, the piano is more than music—it's a connection to his roots. "Piano is the universal language. No matter where you are, the notes are all the same. Here in the United States. Here in Mexico."
Now, as he plays the pieces they once shared, he honors the woman who gave him this gift. "It's kind of like a tribute now."
Whether he's blocking on the offensive line, solving complex equations, or tickling the ivories, JC Martinez proves that true greatness isn't about choosing one path—it's about carrying your legacy forward on every field you step onto.
