Steve Vinson says his goodbye — Colon hoops coach talks about stepping away from the program

After seven seasons at the helm of the Colon boys basketball program, coach Steve Vinson is calling it a career. And what a career it was.

Vinson recently announced he would be stepping down from the Magi program, leaving behind a legacy of five consecutive district titles and an impressive 113-52 overall record. This past season, the team reached new heights by making the school's first-ever quarterfinals appearance for boys basketball, capturing a regional championship along the way and finishing among the final eight teams in Division 4.

"We talked about legacy this entire year," Vinson said. "I knew it was going to be a special year and I tried everything I could to help the guys realize how special this team was."

The Magi entered the season with high expectations, and Vinson and his squad were determined to leave their mark. They wanted to be a shining example for young hoopers and the community alike. Mission accomplished.

"Obviously going out with a regional championship and ending the season with the most ever wins in a season puts this team as one of the best who have ever done it at Colon," Vinson added. "It's kind of like a 'sail off into the sunset' moment for me I guess."

Vinson admitted he had been contemplating stepping away for a couple of years. After each of his previous six seasons, he would take time to reflect, only to feel the familiar itch to return to the sidelines. But this time, that itch never came.

"After each season, I promised myself to take some time and think it over to the fullest extent," he explained. "But this time, the motivation to keep coaching just didn't rekindle itself."

For a program that has seen steady success under his leadership, Vinson's departure marks the end of an era. But as he rides off into the sunset with a regional championship in hand, he leaves behind a standard of excellence that will inspire Colon basketball for years to come.
