The Golden State Warriors came just one game shy of making the playoffs, losing to the Phoenix Suns in a winner-take-all game in the Play-In tournament. It’s been a frustrating stretch of seasons for the Warriors since defeating the Boston Celtics in the 2022 NBA Finals, failing to advance past the second round since raising the banner.

Now the franchise and head coach Steve Kerr are tasked with finding the best path toward contending for another title before superstar Stephen Curry retires, even if that means Kerr moving on from the franchise.

Kerr recently conducted an interview with the New Yorker’s Charles Bethea and talked about where his head is at.

“This is a really interesting situation, and I’m very respectful of the organization and their place in the universe right now,” Kerr said. “And I know how this stuff works. Most coaching runs just last a certain amount of time, and then it’s best for everybody to move forward. And what we have to figure out is whether now is that time, because what complicates it is we still have Steph and Draymond.”

Bethea told Kerr that he feels that the head coach has a future in politics if he wanted one, whenever his coaching days were finished.

“Well, that’s flattering and I appreciate it. I don’t have any desire to go into politics,” Kerr responded. “I love basketball. This is my world. All of my friends and my people are in this world. And whether I keep coaching the Warriors or not, I imagine I’ll be involved in basketball.”

Ultimately, Kerr’s goal is to end on good terms with the Warriors, whether he is finished coaching this season or not.

“And whatever happens, it’s going to end well. I know that, because it’s too important not to.”

Whatever happens from here, a political career is off the table.
