Kerr's contract expired after the season but he has reportedly agreed to a new two-year deal

Steve Kerr is staying put. The Golden State Warriors head coach has reportedly agreed to a new two-year deal, putting an end to months of speculation about his future and keeping him on the bench for at least one more run alongside Stephen Curry.

The decision, first reported by ESPN, makes Kerr the NBA's highest-paid coach once again. His previous contract—a two-year, $35 million extension signed in 2024—expired after this season, leaving his return in doubt as the Warriors navigated a frustrating and transitional year.

At 60, Kerr has been the steady hand behind Golden State's dynasty, but even he admitted the run might be winding down. After the Warriors were eliminated from the Play-In Tournament by the Phoenix Suns on April 17, he reflected on the natural cycle of coaching tenures. "These jobs all have an expiration date," Kerr said. "When the run ends, sometimes it's time for new blood and new ideas."

Yet, Kerr also made his loyalty clear earlier this season, telling The Athletic, "I will never leave Steph Curry." That bond ultimately won out. With Curry now 38, Draymond Green at 36, and Klay Thompson already gone, this new contract signals one last push for championship glory—not a long-term rebuild.

The Warriors are expected to be extremely aggressive this offseason. They made a strong run at Giannis Antetokounmpo before the trade deadline and are likely to try again. Kawhi Leonard is also reportedly on their radar, and there have even been whispers about LeBron James—who played for Kerr during the 2024 Olympics—as a free-agent target if he decides to keep playing.

For now, the core remains: Kerr and Curry, together again, chasing a fifth title. The dynasty may be fading, but it's not finished yet.
