After months of uncertainty, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has made a decision that will delight fans across the basketball world. The four-time NBA champion coach, who was on the verge of walking away from the sidelines, has signed a two-year extension to remain with the franchise, solidifying his status as the highest-paid coach in the league.
Just weeks ago, Kerr was preparing for what he thought might be his final game. During the Play-In Tournament against the Los Angeles Clippers in April, he told ESPN he was "95% certain" about retiring. But after a vintage Stephen Curry performance kept the Warriors alive—and following an eventual elimination by the Phoenix Suns—Kerr found himself at a crossroads.
"I'm thrilled to be back," Kerr said during a press conference Friday. "I couldn't be more excited to continue on this job. We had a great process the last few weeks trying to figure this out together. I don't think this actually happens in pro sports—where you have these kinds of conversations and genuinely try to figure out what's the right thing."
So what changed? According to Kerr, it was a simple but powerful comment from his wife that shifted his perspective. After a week of deep reflection and daily conversations with his family, Kerr realized that his love for coaching—and specifically his love for the Warriors—hadn't faded.
"My wife said something that really stuck with me," Kerr explained. "She said, 'You know, you might coach again someday, but you'll never coach the Warriors again.' And that was really meaningful."
Kerr also credited conversations with Warriors owner Joe Lacob, general manager Mike Dunleavy, and key players like Stephen Curry and Draymond Green for helping him see the bigger picture. Despite missing the playoffs for the second time in three years, Kerr believes the foundation for a return to glory is still in place.
For a team and a fanbase that have grown accustomed to championship parades, Kerr's return represents more than just continuity. It's a statement that the Warriors' dynasty isn't finished—and that the man who built it still believes in what's possible.
