The Golden State Warriors are keeping their championship-winning head coach in the fold. Steve Kerr, the architect behind four NBA titles in the Bay Area, has signed a new two-year contract extension, putting an end to any retirement rumors that swirled during the season.
Kerr’s journey with the Warriors has been nothing short of legendary. Since taking over in 2014, he’s led the team to a title in his very first season and built a dynasty that dominated the league for nearly a decade. Even as the roster transitioned and recent seasons brought early playoff exits, the organization has stood firmly behind their leader.
The new deal, announced Saturday night, keeps Kerr on the sidelines through at least the 2027-28 season. While exact financial terms haven’t been disclosed, ESPN reports the extension will keep Kerr as the highest-paid coach in the NBA. For context, he earned $17.5 million in 2026—more than $2 million above the league’s second-highest paid coach.
Kerr’s commitment to the Warriors comes after a season filled with speculation about his future. Following Golden State’s play-in tournament elimination, Kerr admitted he was at peace with whatever decision the franchise made. "I still love coaching, but I get it," he said. "These jobs all have an expiration date. There is a run that happens, and when the run ends, sometimes it's time for new blood and new ideas."
Clearly, that expiration date hasn’t arrived yet. With Steph Curry still leading the charge and a young core developing around him, Kerr will have two more seasons to write the next chapter of his coaching legacy. For Warriors fans, that means more of the strategic genius, calm leadership, and championship pedigree that have defined his tenure—and plenty of opportunities to celebrate in style.
