A new era is officially underway for Stetson University women's basketball. The Hatters formally introduced Melissa DeVore as their new head coach last week, marking a significant transition for the program following the long and successful tenure of Lynn Bria.
DeVore, who arrives after six seasons leading Division II Coker University, addressed boosters, players, and staff at her introductory press conference inside the Edmunds Center—her new home court. She expressed immediate appreciation for the warm welcome to DeLand, noting how the community has eased her transition. "It wasn't easy to leave where I was at, but you guys have really made it special," DeVore told the crowd.
Taking over a Division I program represents a major career step for DeVore, who compiled a 96-72 record at Coker. She steps into the shoes of Bria, the winningest coach in Stetson history, who recently departed after 18 seasons to join the staff at UCF.
Importantly for team continuity, the core of the roster has remained intact. All eligible players chose to stay with the Hatters through the coaching change, and they will be joined by three incoming freshmen and a new staff. DeVore has already begun implementing her vision, holding the team's first workout shortly after her arrival.
Her coaching philosophy promises an exciting brand of basketball. Speaking directly to her returning players, DeVore outlined an up-tempo, aggressive system. "I don't want you to be afraid of playing fast and defending," she said. "The way that we play is fun. It's fan-friendly, and I can't wait to get going."
With the first workouts complete and individual meetings scheduled, the foundation for the Melissa DeVore era is firmly in place. The Hatters and their fans now look ahead to a season defined by a fast-paced new identity and the energy of a fresh start.
