The Indiana Fever are gearing up for their 2026 season opener this Saturday against the Dallas Wings, and all eyes will be on the court as the last four number-one overall picks take the floor. Among them is 2024 sensation Caitlin Clark, a player who has single-handedly transformed the WNBA and the way the game is covered. But with greatness comes immense scrutiny, and Fever head coach Stephanie White recently opened up about what it's like to guide the league's brightest star.

Appearing on Women's Sports Now Thursday, White addressed the pressure that comes with coaching Clark, framing it as a unique opportunity rather than a burden. "You know, I think it's a blessing," White said. "She challenges me every day to be better. Her skill set is elite. Her basketball mind is elite. She challenges us as coaches to be better, and it challenges us to put our team in positions for success, but also allow her to do what she does best. So, again, I don't think it's pressure."

White emphasized that great players attract great coaches, and Clark's relentless drive makes the job both demanding and rewarding. "Great players want to be around great players, right? And great coaches want to be around great players, and they challenge you in a different way. I'm a basketball junkie, so watching games to find different ways we can get her easier looks is an outstanding challenge. And she wants to be coached. She wants to be the best, and she wants to be pushed. She wants that challenge too, and that makes it a lot easier."

While Clark is determined to be the best in the world, White knows her role extends beyond X's and O's—she has to protect her young star. One key adjustment for the upcoming season? Moving Clark off the ball more than she was in her first two years. "The way that people and teams play Caitlin is different than how they play everyone else. It's the nature of her skillset, what she brings to the table, and it's really the ultimate compliment," White told reporters this week. "In order to alleviate how hard she has to work, we need to find ways to free her up and let her do what she does best."

As the Fever tip off a new season, the dynamic between White and Clark will be one of the most compelling storylines in the league. For fans and aspiring players alike, it's a masterclass in how elite coaching and superstar talent can elevate an entire franchise.
