Mike Tomlin will follow in Bill Cowher's footsteps by moving to TV after a long run coaching the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cowher doesn't think his successor will fully replicate his career arc.

Tomlin will reportedly join NBC as a studio analyst after 19 seasons with the Steelers. Football fans already hear from a Super Bowl-winning Pittsburgh head coach on Sundays, as Cowher works for CBS.

Cowher discussed Tomlin's move from the sideline to studio during Friday's appearance on "The Dan Patrick Show." The 68-year-old hasn't returned to coaching since ending his Steelers tenure in 2006.

"I think a lot of guys who have left have come back. I did not come back," Cowher said. "My situation was a little bit different than those guys."

However, Cowher doesn't see the same scenario unfolding for Tomlin. He expects Tomlin to return to coaching at some point.

"I don't think so," Cowher said when asked if Tomlin will make broadcasting a long-term career. "I think he loves the sideline. I think he loves the competition. I think he loves that arena. He's an arena guy."

Cowher told a live audience in Pittsburgh that he couldn't see himself coaching a team other than the Steelers. Yet fans may have to get accustomed to seeing Tomlin lead another squad if he makes a coaching comeback.

For now, Tomlin is slated to provide commentary on NBC's "Football Night In America." Cowher gave the fellow coach a simple piece of advice for the new role.

"Just be yourself," Cowher said. "Honestly, I think that's the biggest thing for Mike."
