Leading the area’s top team to a historic run, Will Seward is the 2026 StarNews All-Area Boys Basketball Player of the Year. See who joins him on our All-Area first and second teams.

Rewind to the start of the 2025-26 high school basketball season in North Carolina, and Will Seward wasn't a name on anyone's radar. Despite a breakout junior year, the 6-foot-6 senior entered the winter without a single college offer or the typical preseason buzz that follows top prospects. He and his Hoggard Vikings teammates were, by all accounts, overlooked.

What followed was a masterclass in team basketball. Hoggard built its identity on a rock-solid foundation of structure, discipline, and suffocating defense—a formula that proved nearly impossible for opponents to crack. At the heart of it all was Will Seward, who transformed into the team's indispensable centerpiece. He dominated the glass, protected the rim, and provided consistent offense, averaging 16.3 points per game while leading the Vikings on a historic surge to their first state championship appearance in 56 years.

For his pivotal role in that remarkable run, Seward has been named the 2026 StarNews All-Area Boys Basketball Player of the Year. "It's just really fulfilling to see how far I’ve come to become the player I am now," Seward reflected, thinking back to earlier days when playing time was hard to come by.

The Vikings' journey culminated on the state's biggest stage, where they nearly pulled off the ultimate upset. In the NCHSAA 8A state championship, Hoggard stunned powerhouse West Charlotte early, racing out to a commanding 15-point lead. For most of the night, it looked like the perfect capstone to a storybook season.

But in a heartbreaking twist, West Charlotte found a go-ahead basket with under one second left, snatching victory from Hoggard's grasp in the final moment. "What hurt the most was knowing how close we were and how we proved that we could really win it all," Seward said. "There’s nothing I enjoy more than proving people wrong, and winning that game would certainly have done that to a lot of people."

Seward closes his stellar three-year varsity career with 962 points, 417 rebounds, and 58 blocks—a stat line that underscores his all-around impact. Reflecting on the season, he admitted, "I don’t think it’s fully sunk in yet. It might be a while before I really comprehend how special that is." His story is a powerful reminder that heart, hustle, and teamwork can fuel a team to achieve the extraordinary.
