St. John's men's basketball has officially kicked off its offseason with a major statement, securing a commitment from star European combo guard Quinn Ellis. This first signing signals a significant upgrade for the Red Storm backcourt, bringing in a player seasoned against top-tier professional competition.
The Sheffield, England native arrives with an impressive resume built over seven years in Italy, most recently with powerhouse club Olimpia Milano. Ellis isn't just coming off a deep playoff run; he's coming off being named the Italian Cup MVP in 2025, proving he can perform and win under pressure. His breakout debut season in the EuroLeague this year saw him average 8.4 points and 4.4 assists, showcasing his efficient scoring (49.3% FG) and playmaking against Europe's elite.
For Rick Pitino's squad, which faced playmaking challenges last season, Ellis is a perfect fit. At 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds, he brings a jumbo-sized, physical presence to the point guard spot. His nimble ball-handling and elite floor vision will be a welcome addition, and his frame allows him to absorb contact and thrive in Pitino's defensive system. This move also creates optimal lineup flexibility, allowing Ian Jackson to slide back to his natural two-guard role and bolstering the bench with Dylan Darling.
Ellis has also shined on the international stage, averaging 11.8 points and 4.6 assists for Great Britain, and torched nets during FIBA World Cup qualifiers. His prior experience in the 2024 NBA Summer League with the Portland Trail Blazers further demonstrates his readiness for the high-major college game.
With Ellis on board, St. John's now has eight scholarship players locked in for the 2026-27 campaign. The Red Storm are clearly building a roster designed for toughness and savvy, hosting key transfers to complement this foundational backcourt addition. It's an exciting first step for a program looking to make waves in the Big East.
