The NBA playoffs delivered another dramatic twist as San Antonio Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama was ejected for the first time in his young career during Sunday's 114-109 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 22-year-old French sensation was handed a flagrant foul level two penalty after his elbow connected with Timberwolves center Naz Reid's jaw in the second quarter—a call so unfamiliar to the rookie that he had to ask teammate Harrison Barnes what it meant.

The sequence unfolded with 8:39 left in the second quarter and Minnesota leading 36-34. Wembanyama grabbed an offensive rebound and found himself in a crowded paint, battling Timberwolves defenders Jaden McDaniels and Reid. As McDaniels collided with him, Wembanyama spun to his right with his elbow raised, swinging it backward and catching Reid hard on the jaw. Officials immediately whistled a foul, and after review, deemed the contact unnecessary and excessive—triggering an automatic ejection.

In a classy exit, Wembanyama made a point to high-five every teammate as he left the court. The Spurs, who had taken an eight-point lead early in the fourth quarter even without their star, couldn't hold off Minnesota's late rally. The Timberwolves evened the best-of-seven series at two games apiece.

Wembanyama, who had dazzled with 39 points in the Spurs' Game 3 victory on Friday, finished with just four points and four rebounds before his sudden departure. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson defended his 7-foot-4 superstar, arguing the elbow wasn't intentional but rather a reaction to the constant physical punishment Wembanyama endures game after game.

"The amount of physicality that people play with him, at some level you have to protect yourself," Johnson said. "Every single play on every single part of the floor people are trying to impose their physicality on him. He doesn't complain one time. We don't complain... but at some stage he should be protected and if not, he's going to have to protect himself. And unfortunate stuff like this happens."

The incident highlights a growing tension in the playoffs: how much physical contact is too much for a generational talent like Wembanyama? For now, the Spurs will need to regroup without their star for a pivotal Game 5.
