The Springfield Thunderbirds have made a habit of defying the odds, and their Game 2 performance in the Atlantic Division Final was no exception. Down 3-0 heading into the third period against the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins, the Thunderbirds looked like they were on the brink of a short series. But as head coach Steve Ott put it, "We got the recipe for the way we needed to play. We saw it in the third, and we saw it in overtime."

This comeback is more than just one game—it's the story of their entire season. After a crushing 8-1 loss in their playoff opener and a 2-0 shutout in Game 1 of this series, many had written them off. But the Thunderbirds have built an identity around resilience. "We're a relentless team," Ott said, and that grit was on full display in Game 2.

The third period began with a shorthanded goal that lit a fire under the team. Then, with the net empty in the final three minutes, they struck twice to force overtime. It was their fourth overtime game of the Calder Cup Playoffs, and by the time extra time rolled around, the question wasn't if they would win, but how. Akil Thomas provided the answer, firing a puck toward the net and getting a lucky bounce to seal the 4-3 victory and tie the series.

What makes this team special is their ability to stay unfazed against elite competition. Facing goaltender Sergei Murashov, one of the AHL's best, didn't shake them—they had already faced top-tier netminders in the previous round. The Thunderbirds know that in hockey, and in life, it's not about how you start but how you finish. And this season, they've proven they're never out of the fight.
