After more than five games without a goal, Sporting Jax men's soccer finally found the back of the net in Indianapolis—but it wasn't enough to snap their losing streak.

Playing at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on May 9, Sporting Club Jacksonville (0-8-1) fell 2-1 to the Indy Eleven in USL Championship action. The scoreless drought ended at 523 agonizing minutes when Ahmad Al-Qaq buried an assist from Emil Jaaskelainen just before halftime, giving Sporting Jax a short-lived 45th-minute lead.

But as has been the case all season, set-piece defending proved to be Sporting Jax's undoing. Both Indy goals came from corner kicks: Bruno Rendon converted Aodhan Quinn's cross in the 51st minute, and Anthony Herbert headed home the game-winner in the 65th minute. It's a recurring theme that continues to haunt a team desperate for its first win.

Despite the breakthrough, Sporting Jax managed just one shot on target from nine attempts. Indy (3-2-3), by contrast, fired 26 shots—nine of them on frame. Goalkeeper Christian Olivares did his part with seven saves, but it wasn't enough to keep the hosts at bay.

Notable appearances included former University of North Florida midfielder Luc Granitur earning a start for Sporting Jax, while Jack Blake—a familiar face to Jacksonville soccer fans from his days with the Jacksonville Armada in 2017—played the full 90 minutes for Indy.

Sporting Jax will look to regroup in midweek action, stepping outside league play for a USL Cup tournament match against third-level opponent Sarasota Paradise at Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch. It's a chance to build momentum—and maybe find the net more than once.
