Luciano Spalletti has openly admitted to a "mistake" regarding his handling of Juventus summer signing Lois Openda, praising the Belgian's "outstanding" commitment despite limited playing time this season.
Openda's debut campaign at the Allianz Stadium has been far from the fairytale many expected. The 25-year-old striker has managed just two goals in 34 appearances across all competitions—a stark contrast to the promise he showed during his time at RB Leipzig. Signed on loan last summer with an obligation to buy, Juventus triggered the €42 million permanent transfer clause after securing a top-ten Serie A finish. However, with only 1,100 minutes of action this season—and a mere 688 under Spalletti since October—Openda has struggled to find his rhythm.
When pressed on the forward's lack of game time, Spalletti didn't shy away from accountability. "That is another mistake I've made," the Juventus boss admitted in a press conference, as reported by Sky Sport. "I have to make decisions, but I'm sure I'll get something wrong. He is committed and demonstrates outstanding professionalism. I haven't played him much because I thought others could give me better results."
The timing couldn't be tougher for Openda. With Dusan Vlahovic returning from injury and potentially starting against Lecce this weekend, the Belgian's opportunities are set to dwindle further in the final three matches of the season. Spalletti confirmed as much during his pre-match briefing, signaling that Vlahovic's return will likely push Openda further down the pecking order.
For Juventus, the €3 million loan fee and hefty €42 million permanent clause now raise questions about the investment's value. While Openda's professionalism has earned praise from his manager, the on-pitch returns have yet to justify the price tag. As the season winds down, both player and club will be hoping for a fresh start—perhaps with more minutes and a clearer role—when the new campaign kicks off.
