Spring football is in the air in Hattiesburg, and a new era is officially underway for Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles are set to cap their first spring practice session under new head coach Blake Anderson with the annual spring game this Saturday, April 18th. Kickoff is scheduled for noon CT at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
This marks a significant transition for the program. Last season, under former coach Charles Huff, Southern Miss posted a solid 7-5 regular-season record, narrowly missing a berth in the Sun Belt championship game. Huff departed for Memphis in December, paving the way for offensive coordinator Blake Anderson to step into the top job.
Anderson got an early taste of leadership, guiding the team in the New Orleans Bowl against Western Kentucky. While the Golden Eagles fell 27-16 to finish 7-6, the game offered a glimpse of the roster's potential, from explosive plays on offense to key defensive stops.
Now, all eyes turn to the spring game. This intrasquad scrimmage is the first major public showcase of Anderson's vision for the team. Fans will get a critical look at the developing depth chart, offensive schemes, and defensive adjustments as the Golden Eagles begin building toward the fall.
For players, it's a prime opportunity to compete under the lights and solidify their roles. For the Hattiesburg community, it's a chance to welcome the new coaching staff and rally behind the black and gold. Saturday's action is more than just a scrimmage; it's the first chapter of the 2025 campaign.
