South Salem baseball standout Blake Kansky has earned the Maps Credit Union boys Athlete of the Week honors, as voted by Statesman Journal readers. The senior pitcher delivered a commanding performance on April 22, tossing a complete seven-inning gem in the Saxons' 8-1 victory over Liberty. Kansky struck out six batters while allowing just three hits, showcasing the kind of dominance that makes him a player to watch this season.
Kansky's impressive outing clearly resonated with fans, as he captured an overwhelming 89.47% of the reader poll votes. Sprague baseball's Cameron VanKempen finished a distant second with 9.86% of the vote, following his own strong performance—two hits, two runs, and two RBIs in the Olympians' 7-5 win over West Salem on April 24.
This week's nominee pool featured a diverse array of talent from across the region, including standouts from North Marion and Central track and field, as well as South Salem, Woodburn, and Sprague baseball. Among the other notable nominees was Arnold, a senior from North Marion who launched the javelin 180 feet, 3 inches on April 18 to take first at the North Marion Invitational—a toss that ranks as the second-best mark in Class 4A this season. Cirino, also a senior, turned heads on the track with a blistering 3:53.13 in the 1,500-meter race at the Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays on April 24, good for the second-best 5A time of the season. Woodburn's Pickett, a junior, made his presence felt on the diamond with two hits and three RBIs in the Bulldogs' 6-5 win over Dallas on April 23.
With Kansky's dominant pitching leading the way, this week's Athlete of the Week honors highlight the depth of athletic talent across the region—and serve as a reminder that whether on the mound, the track, or the field, these student-athletes are giving it their all every time they compete.
