Sonny Gray pitched five innings in his return from injury and the Boston Red Sox finished a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers with a 4-0 win on Wednesday night. Gray (3-1) was making his first start since facing the Tigers on April 20 at Fenway Park — a game he left after 2 2/3 innings with a strained hamstring. Jack Flaherty (0-3) allowed four runs — two earned — on three hits and a walk in five innings.

Sonny Gray made a triumphant return to the mound on Wednesday night, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 4-0 shutout victory and a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers. It was a performance that showcased resilience and precision, proving why Gray is a key piece of Boston's rotation.

Gray (3-1) pitched five solid innings in his first start since April 20, when he left a game against the same Tigers with a strained hamstring after just 2 2/3 innings. This time, he was in control, allowing only four hits and two walks while striking out two. For a pitcher returning from injury, it was exactly the kind of outing the Red Sox needed to keep their momentum rolling.

On the other side, Tigers starter Jack Flaherty (0-3) had a night of mixed fortunes. He struck out an impressive 10 batters over five innings but was undone by a pair of two-run innings. After fanning the first five batters he faced—a blistering start—Flaherty allowed runs in the third and fourth innings, ultimately surrendering four runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk.

The Red Sox broke through in the third inning. Marcelo Mayer led off with an infield single off Colt Keith's glove at third base, and Carlos Narváez was hit by a pitch. Caleb Durbin followed with an RBI double, and Willson Contreras added a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. In the fourth, Masataka Yoshida singled and Ceddanne Rafaela walked before Narváez's grounder slipped under Keith's glove at third, rolling down the left-field line and allowing two more runs to score.

Boston had a chance to add more in the seventh, loading the bases on three walks with one out. But reliever Brant Hurter escaped the jam by striking out Wilyer Abreu and getting Trevor Story to ground out, keeping the Tigers within striking distance—though they never managed to mount a real threat.

The game carried extra tension after Tuesday's bench-clearing incident, which led to Tigers manager A.J. Hinch serving a one-game suspension. Starting pitcher Framber Valdez also sat out after a five-game suspension for hitting Trevor Story with a pitch, a decision he chose not to appeal.

With the sweep complete, the Red Sox head back to Fenway Park for a series against the Tampa Bay Rays, with left-hander Jake Bennett (1-0, 1.80 ERA) scheduled to start Thursday night. The Tigers get a day off before traveling to Kansas City for a three-game set, where right-hander Keider Montero (2-2, 3.48) will face lefty Kris Bubic (3-1, 3.32) in the opener.
