Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Sonny Gray exited the team's Marathon Monday game against the Detroit Tigers after just 2 2/3 innings pitched due to injury.
Soon after his departure, Gray's injury was reported as right hamstring tightness.
"Right hamstring tightness for Sonny Gray," The Boston Globe's Peter Abraham posted on Bluesky.
Gray allowed one run on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts before exiting. He threw 27 of his 40 pitches for strikes.
The right-hander's last stint on the injury list came at the end of the 2024 season with the St. Louis Cardinals when he was shut down due to flexor tendinitis in his forearm.
Gray has been mostly healthy over the last three campaigns though, recording at least 28 starts and 166 1/3 innings pitched each year since his AL Cy Young runner-up season with the Minnesota Twins in 2023.
The offseason acquisition's departure comes as the Red Sox's pitching staff deals with numerous other injuries.
Among the other injured arms are right-handed relievers Johan Oviedo, Justin Slaten and Tyler Uberstine, as well as left-handed pitcher Patrick Sandoval.
Top pitching prospect Payton Tolle could potentially be an option to be promoted if Gray requires a stay on the IL.
