The NFL offseason is in full swing, with teams kicking off Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and gearing up for minicamps and training camps in the weeks ahead. While the 2025 NFL Draft wrapped up less than a month ago, roster moves are still buzzing across the league as clubs look to fine-tune their lineups through free-agent signings and waiver claims.

In a move that’s turning heads, the Green Bay Packers have added a familiar name to their receiving corps. The team claimed wide receiver Brenden Rice off waivers on Wednesday—and yes, he’s the son of legendary Hall of Fame pass-catcher Jerry Rice. It’s a storyline dripping with legacy, but Brenden is still chasing his own NFL breakthrough.

Unlike his father’s iconic career, Brenden’s path has been anything but smooth. Once projected as a Day 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, he slipped to the seventh round, where the Los Angeles Chargers took a chance on him. Since then, he’s yet to see game action and has bounced around the league, joining the Packers as his fifth team. Most recently, Rice spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders during the 2025 season and into the offseason, before being waived to make room for other roster additions.

Rice’s college resume, however, shows real promise. He played two seasons at Colorado before transferring to USC, where he put together a productive career with 103 receptions for 1,674 yards and 20 touchdowns. His senior year was particularly impressive, hauling in 11 touchdown passes from future No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams. At Colorado, he also showed his versatility as a returner, racking up 587 yards and a touchdown on 20 returns.

Despite his NFL struggles, Rice has managed to stick on practice squads—a testament to his potential. Sometimes, all a player needs is the right opportunity and a fresh start. Joining the Packers, a team known for developing wide receivers, could be just that for the young pass-catcher. Now, the big question is: Can Brenden Rice begin to carve out his own story in Green Bay?
