There's nothing quite like playoff softball to bring out the best in rivalries, and the first round of the FHSAA softball playoffs delivered just that. For the second time in barely a week, Yulee edged out county foe West Nassau, this time with a dramatic 3-2 victory in the Region 1-3A first round on May 6.
The game was a nail-biter from start to finish. With the score tied and tension mounting, Carmen Overstreet stepped up in the sixth inning and launched a home run that proved to be the difference-maker. West Nassau (14-12) didn't go quietly, loading the bases in the seventh with the winning run in scoring position. But Yulee pitcher Paislie Turner kept her cool, notching a clutch strikeout to seal the win and send the Hornets (12-11) into the second round on May 12. Kyli Mathis and Kierstin Northern each collected two hits to lead the Yulee offense.
Now, Yulee faces a much tougher test: top-seeded Wakulla (23-4). The War Eagles showed exactly why they're the No. 1 seed, overpowering Wolfson (12-9) in an 8-0 shutout. Cylie Long, Makenzie Marlow, and Parker Stubbs all went deep for Wakulla, which has now crushed 33 home runs as a team this season—a testament to their explosive lineup.
In other first-round action, Paxon's power surge continued in impressive fashion. Maleah Rouse and Amaya Hislop both went yard, powering the Golden Eagles to an 8-2 win over Suwannee (9-15). Kassidy Edwards was dominant in the circle, striking out 12 batters, and she also helped her own cause with two doubles at the plate. Paxon (16-7) is looking like a team that could make some noise as the playoffs progress.
From dramatic walk-off moments to power-hitting displays, the first round of the FHSAA softball playoffs had it all. As teams gear up for the next round, one thing is clear: the road to the state championship is only getting tougher—and more exciting.
