The Texas high school softball playoffs are heating up, and this weekend's action did not disappoint. In a dramatic Game 2 showdown, Hebron forced a decisive third game against Keller Timber Creek, thanks to a jaw-dropping performance from junior shortstop Lilly Pirrello. Playing at Cowgirl Field in Coppell, Pirrello went a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate, smashing two home runs and driving in all five runs for her team in a 5-1 victory.
"We were not ready to see the season end," said Pirrello, who also stole two bases and accounted for every one of Hebron's hits. Her home runs—her seventh and eighth of the season—were memorable for more than just their power. After a sophomore-year mishap where she jumped over first base on her first career homer, she now makes a point to double back and touch the bag. "Now I go back to make sure," she added with a grin.
Hebron (27-12) kept its hopes alive of reaching the fourth playoff round for the first time since 2012, and it wasn't just Pirrello's bat that made the difference. Senior pitcher Kate Buesing delivered a gritty performance, allowing no walks, striking out eight, and retiring the final eight Timber Creek batters in order. "It was us or them with everything on the line," said Hebron coach Chelsea Bunjovac, "and we brought the fight to them."
Timber Creek (28-8-1), which won the series opener 6-3 on Thursday, actually outhit Hebron 6-4 but was undone by three errors and missed opportunities. Ava Thomas gave the Falcons an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI double, but Hebron answered in the third when Pirrello launched a two-run homer over the left-center wall to put her team ahead for the first time in the series.
Game 3 is scheduled for noon Saturday in Coppell, with the winner advancing to face Flower Mound in the Region I final. Flower Mound, meanwhile, secured its spot with a thrilling sweep of its own, proving that in playoff softball, every swing and every pitch can change the game.
