Linden High School's softball team is turning heads this season. After a challenging four-win campaign last year, the Tigers have already matched that total—and then some—pushing past the nine-win mark. The secret to their resurgence? A fresh wave of talent, headlined by a standout freshman pitcher.
Meet Leah Vera, the MyCentralJersey.com Softball Player of the Week for Week 6. This rookie hurler has been a game-changer for Linden, stepping into the circle with poise and power. Her emergence couldn't have come at a better time for a program rediscovering its winning ways.
The Tigers recently saw a five-game winning streak—their longest since 2011—snapped by top-seeded A.L. Johnson in the Union County Tournament. But Vera was the engine behind that historic run, earning victories in four of those games. Highlights included her first career shutout and a dazzling 10-strikeout performance against Roselle.
Over 23 innings during that stretch, Vera fanned 33 batters while walking just nine. She also notched a career-high 13 strikeouts in a UCT win over Plainfield. Entering this week, her season stats are impressive: a 7-3 record, 63 strikeouts, and 34 walks across 53 innings.
"Leah has been a great addition to our team," said Linden coach Peter Naumowicz. "She has put in hard work and discipline to excel as our number-one pitcher. Her passion for the game is seen in every game, inning, and pitch. As a freshman, she has put together a great season which we hope is the first of many. She always wants to get better, works with the coaches, and loves pitching to her fellow freshman batterymate Janaya Ortman. She's humble and wants the team to succeed. Our team slogan is 'One heart, one team, one family,' and Leah shows that every day."
