The Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Fighting Saints are poised for a pivotal season. After two years of hovering around .500, including an 11-10 campaign last spring, the team is aiming to make a significant leap forward in the competitive Camden Conference and Section 3A-North.

Leading the charge is head coach Traci Reimann, who enters her third season with a 21-21 record. She’s supported by a dedicated staff of assistants, and despite graduating three key seniors, the program’s future looks bright with a strong turnout of 15 seventh- and eighth-graders at practice. "We're looking forward to another aggressive season," Reimann said. "Teams are always tough in the conference, but we have good numbers coming up."

While the team must fill the void left by graduates like Abby Holtkamp and the injured Faith Duke, who led returning players with a .373 average, a core of experienced seniors is ready to step up. The lineup is anchored by standout pitcher and infielder Taylor VanHeuveln, who posted an 8-6 record with 98 strikeouts last season while also contributing a .333 batting average and 12 stolen bases. "Taylor has added more pitches to her rotation," Reimann noted. "She's also a solid shortstop when not pitching."

She’s joined by fellow senior starters Ashlyn Zimmer, Avery Magaard, and Shelbie Anderson, with Magaard bringing a reliable .307 bat to the lineup. The Saints also boast a rising star in freshman Lyla Oakes, who made an immediate impact as an eighth-grader last year with a stellar .379 average and 25 hits.

With a blend of veteran leadership and promising young talent, the Fighting Saints have the pieces in place for a potential breakthrough. The journey begins as their season gets underway, and this group is determined to turn their .500 history into a winning future.
