When Lionel Messi steps into any room, the energy shifts. And when that room happens to be the paddock at the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, you get a collision of two worlds that fans can't get enough of.

The Argentine World Cup champion has called South Florida home since joining Inter Miami CF three years ago, and he's become more than just a soccer star—he's a local icon. After leading Inter Miami to the 2025 MLS Cup and earning back-to-back MLS MVP honors, Messi's presence at any event is headline news.

So when he walked into the paddock ahead of the May 3 race, it was no surprise that drivers and fans alike stopped in their tracks. Messi, accompanied by his wife Antonela and their three sons, arrived just hours after scoring a goal in Inter Miami's 4-3 loss to Orlando FC. Talk about a busy Sunday.

As a guest of Mercedes—Messi owns non-racing versions of the brand's cars and has made promotional appearances for them—he posed for photos outside the garage, adding a touch of soccer royalty to the high-octane atmosphere. The race itself was moved up three hours to 1 p.m. ET due to a rainy forecast, but the buzz around Messi's visit was electric regardless.

The connection between Messi and the racing world runs deeper than a single appearance. Earlier in the week, Alpine F1 driver Franco Colapinto, a fellow Argentine, made a childhood dream come true when he met Messi at the Inter Miami training ground. "It was a very special moment," Colapinto told Motorsport.com. "It was something I had dreamt of all my life. If you ask any Argentinian who they want to meet, it's Leo."

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to kick off across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico on June 11, all eyes are now on Messi's next move. The Golden Ball winner has yet to announce whether he'll help Argentina defend their 2022 World Cup title. Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni is hopeful: "I want him to be there. It's up to him to decide. We hope he will be there."

Whether on the pitch or in the paddock, Messi's star power continues to shine—and South Florida is lucky to call him one of their own.
