It was a day to remember for Washington County track & field athletes, as the Smithsburg boys team captured the MPSSAA Class 1A West region championship on their home track Friday, May 15. The victory sets them up for a potential year-long sweep of state titles, having already claimed the cross country crown last November and the indoor track & field championship in February.
Across the county, seven public-school teams competed in four region championship meets this week. While the 3A West meet will conclude Saturday, May 16, at Frederick, several athletes have already posted standout performances worth celebrating.
Leading the charge was Clear Spring's Daniel Apiou, who dominated the 1A West boys competition with wins in the 110 hurdles (14.98), high jump (6-4), and triple jump (45-1 1/2). Smithsburg's Dylan Herbst showed his versatility by taking first in the 800 meters (1:56.70) and the 1,600 meters (4:25.41), while also finishing second in the 3,200 meters (9:55.85).
Other top-three region finishers included South Hagerstown's Chloe Gietka, who won the 4A North girls triple jump (37-6), and teammate Torin Sitter, who took the 4A North boys 400 meters (49.74). Williamsport's Byron Snyder impressed in the 2A West boys long jump (22-3), also earning second in the 100 meters (11.16) and third in the 200 meters (22.93).
Boonsboro's Sidney Turner claimed the 1A West girls discus title (119-4) and added a third-place finish in the shot put (35 feet). Smithsburg's Skyla Mastronardi soared to victory in the 1A West girls high jump (5-2), while teammate Michael Wynkoop won the 1A West boys 3,200 meters (9:50.30).
Relay teams also shined, with South Hagerstown's 4x200 squad (Myles Clottey, Jameir Simms, Clinton Otinkorang, Torin Sitter) taking the 4A North title in 1:28.99, and Smithsburg's 4x800 team (Camilo Mellott, Gavin Gross, Dylan Lowe, Dylan Herbst) winning the 1A West in 8:13.54.
